Isaac James targets Africa Cup of Nations after first Nigeria call-up

Isaac James has set his sights on representing Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations after receiving his first senior international invitation.

The 22-year-old Alverca defender was selected by Nigeria manager Eric Chelle for the opening 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

James’ call-up follows an impressive start to the 2026/27 season in Portugal, where he has established himself as a regular starter. He began all seven of Alverca’s Primeira Liga matches before the September international break and contributed two assists.

The former Lorient full-back’s ability to play in several positions has also strengthened his case for inclusion. Although left-back is his main role, James can also operate as a left midfielder or as a left-sided centre-back.

James sets long-term international goal

The invitation represents one of the biggest milestones of James’ young career, but he has already identified his next objective.

The Alverca player told Footy-Africa that appearing at the Africa Cup of Nations is one of the ambitions motivating him as he begins his senior international career.

His immediate priority is to establish himself in Chelle’s squad and take advantage of every opportunity available to him. James has previously admitted that he cried after learning he had been called up for the first time.

He now hopes to build on that emotional moment by securing a long-term place in the Super Eagles squad.

James’ selection was based on current form rather than potential alone. His performances for Alverca have included a number of different roles during the opening weeks of the campaign.

He played as a left midfielder against Porto and Braga, was used in defensive midfield against Estrela, and featured at centre-back against Sporting, Santa Clara and Nacional.

That versatility gives Chelle another option on the left side of the Nigeria team, particularly as the defender also offers pace and the ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch.

James joined a squad that includes established defenders such as Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey and Bruno Onyemaechi. The newcomer will now aim to demonstrate that he can compete at international level.

Aina has welcomed the competition, telling Soccernet.ng that James and the other new arrivals had earned their places in the squad.

Nigeria targeting 2027 tournament

James’ first task is to establish himself with Nigeria, but his ambitions extend beyond making his debut.

The Super Eagles are seeking qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Chelle has shown a willingness to bring younger players into the team, with Moses Usor and George Ilenikhena among those handed their international debuts in the past week.

James now has the chance to convert his strong club form into progress with Nigeria. His ability to cover multiple positions could provide another route into Chelle’s plans as the qualifying campaign begins.

For the defender, the long-term aim is clear: remain part of the Super Eagles squad and eventually play at the Africa Cup of Nations.
