Lookman gives Atletico Madrid fresh hope of a Champions League final at home

Ademola Lookman’s arrival has given Atletico Madrid an extra attacking dimension as they target the 2027 Champions League final at their own Metropolitano stadium.

UEFA has selected the Madrid ground to host the final on Saturday 5 June 2027. It will be the stadium’s second Champions League final, following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the 2019 showpiece.

Atletico have reached the final twice under Diego Simeone, in 2014 and 2016, but lost to city rivals Real Madrid on both occasions. Their disciplined defending, organisation and tactical intelligence have made them regular contenders, although they have sometimes lacked attacking inspiration in decisive knockout matches.

Lookman, who joined from Atalanta for €40 million, could provide that missing quality.

The Nigeria international transformed his career in Italy under Gian Piero Gasperini and became one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards. His defining moment came in the 2024 Europa League final, when he scored a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen to secure Atalanta’s first major European trophy.

That performance made Lookman the first player to score a hat-trick in a Europa League final and the first African player to achieve the feat in a major European final. He was subsequently named 2024 CAF African Player of the Year and finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or voting.

Before moving to Spain, Lookman played for Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Atalanta. His career across England, Germany and Italy has exposed him to different tactical systems and demands, helping establish a reputation for adaptability.

For Simeone, the appeal is clear. Lookman can operate as a winger or second striker, attack defenders directly and create chances without needing a steady supply of opportunities. His pace and ability in one-on-one situations also suit an Atletico side that relies on quick transitions and counter-attacking efficiency.

His arrival could give Atletico another way to break down opponents who defend deep, particularly in matches where one moment can determine the outcome. However, Lookman must also adapt to Simeone’s demands. Atletico’s forwards are expected to contribute defensively, and his freedom and attacking instincts will have to fit within a highly structured team shape.

That balance will be central to Atletico’s European ambitions. Lookman cannot carry the campaign alone, with Simeone’s defensive foundation, midfield control and goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s experience also vital over a demanding Champions League run.

The competition remains difficult, with wealthy clubs, strong squads and challenging opponents creating the possibility of injuries, tactical setbacks and inconsistent results. Reaching the final at the Metropolitano is therefore an ambition rather than a guarantee.

Lookman’s record on major European nights gives Atletico a player capable of influencing the biggest occasions. If he remains fit, confident and consistent, his pace, creativity and finishing could complement the defensive identity that has defined the Simeone era and help Atletico challenge Europe’s financial powers.
