Julian Alvarez commits to Atletico de Madrid and ends Barcelona transfer speculation
Julian Alvarez has told Atletico de Madrid sporting director Mateu Alemany that he intends to remain with the club during the current summer transfer window, bringing an end, for now, to speculation over a possible move to Barcelona.
The Argentina international’s decision means he is expected to stay at Atletico de Madrid at least until the next winter transfer window. His message to Alemany has closed the immediate chapter on reports linking him with a move away from the Spanish club.
Alvarez also trained normally with Atletico de Madrid on Tuesday, a development that appeared to dismiss accusations of rebellion which had followed him in recent days. His participation in the session underlined that he remains fully involved with the first team despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the transfer saga has reached its conclusion. Alvarez will continue playing at the Metropolitano after Atletico de Madrid maintained a firm position and refused to allow him to leave for Barcelona.
The club’s stance was a key factor in the outcome. Atletico de Madrid did not agree to release the forward for the proposed move, despite the attention he attracted from several clubs during the summer market.
Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, were among the leading sides interested in signing Alvarez. The London club’s pursuit was described as particularly strong, but the Argentina forward ultimately chose to stay with Atletico de Madrid rather than accept one of the other opportunities associated with his name.
