Kelechi Iheanacho scores in 11th straight league game for Bursaspor

Kelechi Iheanacho extended his extraordinary scoring run to 11 consecutive league matches by finding the net in Bursaspor’s 2-0 win over Pendikspor on Monday.

The Super Eagles forward scored his side’s second goal in the 62nd minute, finishing a chance to give Bursaspor a commanding advantage. Halil Akbunar had put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute with the opening goal.

Iheanacho began the match with 14 goals and three assists from his first 10 league appearances this season. His latest effort took his total to 15 goals and maintained his place among the division’s leading scorers.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City forward had already made club history before Monday’s match. His previous run of nine successive league games with a goal was the longest in Bursaspor’s history, surpassing the eight-match sequence recorded by Brazilian forward Fernandao during the 2014-15 season.

He then moved beyond the club record and into the Turkish football record books. By scoring in 10 consecutive league matches, Iheanacho surpassed the previous national record of nine games, set independently by Galatasaray legend Metin Oktay in 1962-63 and former Turkey international Saffet Sancaklı in 1995-96.

Iheanacho reached that landmark with two goals in Bursaspor’s 3-0 victory over Muglaspor on October 15. His strike against Pendikspor has now taken the sequence to 11 matches and added another achievement to his prolific start in Turkish football.

Bursaspor’s victory was secured after goals from Akbunar and Iheanacho, with the Nigerian’s continued form strengthening his standing among the league’s most productive forwards.
