Luis Enrique extends remarkable final-record as PSG beat Aston Villa in UEFA Super Cup

Luis Enrique strengthened his reputation as the “king of finals” by leading Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

The triumph gave Paris Saint-Germain an early trophy in the new season and further enhanced the remarkable record of their Spanish manager, who has enjoyed outstanding success in decisive matches throughout his coaching career.

According to French network RMC Sport, the victory took Enrique’s record to 17 wins in 20 finals as a manager. That statistic underlines his ability to deliver when the pressure is at its highest.

His first final came on 30 May 2015, when he guided Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final.

Enrique went on to oversee a highly successful two-year spell at Barcelona, during which the club won seven trophies. The highlight was their victory in the UEFA Champions League.

His only final defeat while in charge of Barcelona also came against Athletic Club. Barcelona lost the Spanish Super Cup after a 4-0 defeat in the first leg in August 2015, before drawing the return match 1-1.

The manager also experienced a period without winning a trophy during his time with the Spain national team. While in charge of La Roja, Enrique reached the 2021 UEFA Nations League final, but Spain were beaten 2-1 by France on 10 October of that year.

That defeat remains an exception in a career which has generally seen Enrique return to the winners’ podium after reaching a final.

PSG success continues

His record at Paris Saint-Germain has continued that pattern. Since taking charge of the French club, Enrique has reached 11 finals and won 10 of them.

The only exception came in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, when Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 3-0 defeat by Chelsea on 13 July 2025.

Since then, Paris Saint-Germain have won every final they have contested. They defeated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup, overcame Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup and beat Marseille in the French Super Cup.

They then defeated Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final before adding Aston Villa to the list of teams beaten in the UEFA Super Cup in 2026.

The latest success came as Enrique began his fourth season in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, giving him another opportunity to add to one of the most striking records of his managerial career.

His finals record includes:

– 30 May 2015, Copa del Rey: Barcelona 3-1 Athletic Club.
– 6 June 2015, UEFA Champions League: Barcelona 3-1 Juventus.
– 11 August 2015, UEFA Super Cup: Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla after extra time.
