Morgan Rogers makes instant Chelsea history with record-breaking Premier League debut

Morgan Rogers marked his first competitive appearance for Chelsea by scoring and creating five chances in a 3-2 victory over Fulham, helping Xabi Alonso’s side begin the 2026-27 Premier League season with three points.

Chelsea secured their opening win at Fulham on Monday evening in a five-goal match that saw the visitors establish a commanding advantage before their hosts reduced the deficit.

Rogers, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa during the current summer transfer window, made an immediate impression on his new supporters. The England international scored his first official goal for the London club in the 41st minute, adding Chelsea’s second after they had taken the lead.

Cole Palmer later extended Chelsea’s advantage by scoring their third goal. Fulham responded with two goals of their own, but Chelsea held on to claim victory in Alonso’s first Premier League match in charge during the new campaign.

According to Opta, Rogers became the first Chelsea player since the 2003-04 season to create five chances on his Premier League debut for the club.

“5 – Morgan Rogers has now also become the first Chelsea player to create five chances on his Premier League debut for the club on record since 2003-04.Inventive.”

The statistic underlined the attacking influence Rogers had in his first league appearance for Chelsea. His contribution was not limited to his goal, as he repeatedly created opportunities for team-mates and helped provide a major threat in the visitors’ forward play.

CBS Sports also reported that Rogers created more chances than any other player during the opening weekend of the Premier League. That placed the new signing at the top of the competition’s chance-creation standings after the first round of matches.

“Morgan Rogers created more chances than any other player in the opening Premier League weekend 🥶What a debut 👏”

Rogers’ arrival at Stamford Bridge has come at a significant cost. Several English reports put the value of the transfer at 117m euros (138m euros), making him the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history.

Only Alexander Isak has cost more, having joined Liverpool from Newcastle last summer for a reported fee of £125m.

For Chelsea, Rogers’ debut offered an immediate return on a substantial investment and provided an early indication of his potential importance under Alonso. The 23-year-old’s goal, chance creation and involvement in the win ensured that his first competitive outing for the club would be remembered as a landmark occasion.
