Riyad Mahrez to Wydad? Moroccan club’s reported interest dismissed

Reports that Wydad could sign Riyad Mahrez as a free agent during the current summer transfer window have been played down, with Algerian sources saying the Moroccan club has not made an official move for the former Al-Ahli Saudi player.

Wydad had reportedly considered offering Mahrez a contract after he became available without a transfer fee. His deal with Al-Ahli was terminated following the conclusion of last season, leaving the Algeria international free to negotiate with other clubs.

However, Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiyah cited Algerian media reports which rejected the idea that negotiations were under way. According to those reports, Wydad’s interest had amounted only to internal consideration and had not developed into a formal approach or concrete action.

The possibility of a move to Wydad would also face significant obstacles because Mahrez is attracting interest from AS Roma and a number of clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

His technical ability and extensive experience at the highest level are also expected to make him a difficult player for clubs outside Europe and the Gulf region to secure. The reports suggested those qualities could work against Wydad’s hopes of completing a deal.

Mahrez has built an outstanding career in European and international football. He spent five seasons with Manchester City, winning the Premier League four times between 2018 and 2023 before leaving the club for Al-Ahli.

During his time at Manchester City, Mahrez was part of a side that established itself as one of the dominant forces in English football. His spell at the club formed the most successful period of his career in terms of domestic honours, while his performances also made him one of the most sought-after Algerian players in world football.

He later joined Al-Ahli, where he won the AFC Champions League Elite twice, according to the report. The Saudi club’s decision to end his contract after last season has now placed Mahrez at the centre of transfer speculation, with interest said to be coming from both Europe and the Gulf.

For now, there is no indication that Wydad have progressed beyond an initial interest. The available information points instead to a potential move that was considered by the Moroccan club but has not become an active negotiation.

Mahrez’s next destination therefore remains uncertain. Wydad’s reported interest has generated speculation during the summer window, but the Algerian reports suggest that the club’s chances of signing him are limited by competition from AS Roma and Saudi Pro League sides, as well as by the player’s status and experience.
