Joy Omewa Scores on WSL 2 Debut Despite Forest Defeat to Birmingham City

Nigeria forward Joy Omewa made an instant impact on her Women’s Super League 2 debut, finding the net in Nottingham Forest Women’s 5–1 loss to Birmingham City Women.

Omewa, who completed her move from Danish side Fortuna Hjørring earlier in the week, was handed her first start and wasted little time announcing herself. In the 45th minute, she capitalised on a long ball from Chloe Mustaki that took a deflection into her path. Showing excellent composure, the Nigerian attacker beat her marker and calmly slotted home to restore parity just before half-time.

Forest had fallen behind in the 22nd minute following an unfortunate own goal by Georgia Brougham, but Omewa’s well-taken strike ensured the visitors went into the break level at 1–1.

Birmingham City, however, took control immediately after the restart. Wilma Leidhammar fired the hosts back in front in the 47th minute, setting the tone for a dominant second-half display. Omewa came close to adding a second in the 54th minute, but her left-footed effort was blocked, and she was later replaced by Charlie Wellings in the 63rd minute.

The contest was effectively settled late on as Birmingham ran riot, with Lisa Lindström scoring a devastating hat-trick in the 72nd, 75th, and 78th minutes to complete a comprehensive victory.

Despite the heavy defeat, Omewa’s debut proved a bright spot for Forest. Having scored in 15 of her last 16 league matches, her intelligent movement, calm finishing, and attacking instincts highlighted the quality she brings to the squad and offered supporters real encouragement.

Nottingham Forest will look to bounce back when they face Charlton on 8 February, with Omewa hoping to build on a promising first outing and continue making her mark in WSL 2.
