Rodrygo recovery ahead of schedule raises Real Madrid hopes for January return

Brazil forward Rodrygo is on course for a surprise early return from a serious knee injury, giving Real Madrid fresh optimism he could be back in competitive action as early as January.

The 25-year-old, who suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus injury in March, is progressing faster than originally forecast, according to Spanish newspaper AS. Initial medical estimates suggested he would be sidelined for around 12 months, but his rehabilitation is now being tracked against a 10‐month timeline.

If confirmed, that would open the door for Rodrygo to feature in the second half of the season, a significant boost for a Madrid side undergoing change under new head coach Jose Mourinho.

Serious injury ended World Cup and club season

Rodrygo was injured on 2 March in a league match against Getafe, rupturing the ACL and damaging the outer meniscus in his right knee. The severity of the injury brought an abrupt end to his season with Real Madrid and ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup, where Brazil were eliminated in the last 16.

The forward underwent surgery on 10 March before starting an intensive recovery programme focused on restoring knee mobility and maintaining overall physical conditioning in the gym.

AS reports that the Brazil international has made significant strides in recent weeks and is now walking normally, allowing him to resume day-to-day activities without major restriction. He was even able to travel to the World Cup as a supporter of the Selecao, where he met Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo in the stands.

Medical green light in January the first target

While there is growing belief that Rodrygo could receive medical clearance in January, club staff are said to be cautious about expectations regarding his competitive return.

Even if the doctors approve him to train fully at that point, regaining match sharpness and earning a place back in the starting XI is expected to take additional time. Madrid are understood to be planning a gradual reintegration to minimise the risk of recurrence.

The club’s hope is that Rodrygo can contribute meaningfully during the run‐in of the campaign, when domestic and European competitions typically reach their decisive stages.

Ever‐present at Valdebebas despite lay‐off

Despite being unavailable for selection, Rodrygo has remained a visible presence at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex throughout his recovery. He reported back on the first day of pre‐season under Mourinho, alongside players who did not feature at the World Cup, and underwent routine medical checks with the rest of that group.

The forward has continued to work closely with the club’s medical and fitness staff, maintaining a strong connection with the dressing room as the squad adapts to life under its new coach.

His commitment to staying embedded within the team environment is seen internally as an important factor in his psychological recovery and future leadership role at the club.

Leadership reshuffle after Carvajal exit

Rodrygo’s status inside the squad has been further underlined by a reshuffle of the captaincy hierarchy following the departure of long‐serving defender Dani Carvajal.

According to the report, Federico Valverde has been elevated to the role of first captain, with Vinicius Junior next in line. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is third in the order, while Rodrygo now occupies the fourth position in Madrid’s leadership group.

For a player still recovering from a long‐term injury, the move highlights the level of trust and responsibility placed on him by the club.

If his current rate of progress continues and the medical projections hold, Real Madrid could not only regain a key attacking option earlier than feared, but also see one of their emerging leaders return in time to influence the business end of the season.
