Chuba Akpom scores for Ipswich against Osasuna in friendly

Nigeria forward Chuba Akpom continued his encouraging preseason form after coming off the bench to score in Ipswich Town’s 2-1 defeat to Spanish La Liga side Osasuna on Thursday.

The Nigerian striker made an immediate impact at the JobServe Community Stadium, netting just eight minutes after his introduction as Kieran McKenna’s side stepped up preparations for the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

Osasuna had taken an early lead through Miguel Auria, who found the back of the net in the fifth minute to hand the visitors a deserved advantage heading into the halftime interval.

McKenna responded by introducing Akpom at the start of the second half in place of Emersonn, and the former Ajax forward wasted little time in justifying the decision.

The 29-year-old restored parity in the 54th minute, finishing confidently to level the contest at 1-1 and ignite hopes of an Ipswich comeback.

The goal was another positive sign for Akpom, who is looking to build momentum ahead of the new season after completing a permanent move from Ajax earlier this year following a successful loan spell.

Akpom played an important role in Ipswich’s promotion-winning Championship campaign last season, making 29 league appearances and scoring twice despite starting only seven matches, with most of his outings coming as a substitute.

Having helped the Tractor Boys secure an immediate return to the Premier League, the Nigerian forward is now determined to earn a more prominent role as Ipswich prepare for life back in England’s top flight.

Despite Akpom’s equaliser, Ipswich were unable to avoid defeat as Spanish winger Raúl Moro struck eight minutes from time to restore Osasuna’s lead and seal a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Nevertheless, Akpom’s latest goal will boost his confidence as he continues to impress manager Kieran McKenna and stake his claim for a regular starting place ahead of the new Premier League season.
