Rangers should sell Emmanuel Fernandez if big offer arrives, says Ian McCall

Former Dundee United manager Ian McCall believes Rangers should be prepared to sell Nigeria defender Emmanuel Fernandez if a substantial offer is made for him.

Fernandez has come under scrutiny after two difficult results for Rangers. He was criticised following the side’s 1-1 draw against Dundee United and was also involved in a costly mistake during the 2-1 defeat by Jagiellonia Bialystok.

However, McCall says Rangers should not hesitate to cash in on the defender if his performances lead to a sizeable transfer bid.

Speaking to Ibrox News, McCall suggested the decision would be straightforward if the financial offer was considered high enough.

“They got down the sides of them so easily, Fernandez as well,” McCall said, via Ibrox News.

“I mean, if you get a lot of money for Fernandez, it would be a no-brainer decision to sell.”

Fernandez had an impressive first season with Rangers during the 2025–26 campaign, appearing in 28 Scottish Premiership matches.

His displays in defence helped increase his market value and attracted attention beyond club football. Those performances also resulted in his first call-up to the Nigeria Super Eagles in March 2026.

The defender played an important role in central defence as Rangers finished third in the Scottish Premiership. Despite the difficult moments in the draw with Dundee United and the loss to Jagiellonia Bialystok, his overall season was described as a strong debut campaign.

McCall’s comments come after criticism of Rangers’ defending, particularly in the way opponents were able to exploit space down the sides of the team. Fernandez was singled out alongside the wider defensive unit after the two matches.

The former Dundee United manager’s view is that Rangers should weigh Fernandez’s sporting contribution against the possibility of receiving a significant transfer fee. If a large enough offer arrives, McCall believes selling the Nigeria international would be the obvious choice.

Fernandez’s performances during the 2025–26 season established him as an important part of the Rangers defence and helped earn recognition at international level. His first Nigeria Super Eagles call-up followed a campaign in which he made 28 league appearances and contributed to Rangers’ third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.

The defender’s future at Rangers could therefore become a talking point if interest develops and a substantial proposal is submitted. For McCall, the size of any offer would be central to the decision, with a lucrative fee making a sale difficult to reject.
