African women abroad: Oshoala shines as Kundananji and Chawinga continue exploits
African players in Europe showed their mettle ahead of the Paris 2023 Olympics Qualifiers and we review the performing stars from Africa abroad for last weekend.
Asisat Oshoala (FC Barcelona, Spain)
The Nigerian forward scored her second and third goal of the campaign as FC Barcelona thrashed Granada 6-1.
She scored two goals within two minutes in the second half after Patricia Guijarro, Ona Batlle, Mariona Caldentey, and Selma Paralluelo had given the host a four-goal lead.
The former Arsenal forward is with the Nigerian national team ahead of the Olympic qualifiers against Ethiopia.
Anissa Lahmari (Las Planas, Spain)
Moroccan forward, Anissa Lahmari was on the scorers sheet but her goal could not prevent Spanish top-flight side, Las Planas from a 2-1 loss at home against Toni Payne’s Sevilla.
Lahmari scored the opening goal for the host in the 17th minute. Sevilla responded with two goals from Eva Llamas and Inma Gabarro.
Rachael Kundananji (Madrid CFF, Spain) and Esther Okoronkwo (UDG Tenerife, Spain)
Zambian forward Rachael Kundananji continued her goal-scoring form for Madrid CFF against UDG Tenerife.
She scored her side’s second goal during a 3-2 win over UDG Tenerife. Nigerian forward, Esther Okoronkwo converted her second goal of the season for UDG Tenerife during the game.
Laura Dominguez scored the winning goal for Madrid CFF in the additional minutes of the second half.
Rofiat Imuran (Stade de Reims, France)
Nigerian defender, Rofiat Imuran opened her goal account for the season as her French top-flight side suffered a 5-1 loss to French champions, Lyon.
She equalised Alice Sombath’s opener in the 27th minute of play. Goals from Eugenie Le Sommer, Melchie Dumornay, Lindsey Horan, and Amel Majri were enough to seal a 5-1 win.
Tabitha Chawinga (PSG, France)
Malawian forward, Chawinga scored PSG’s second goal during a 4-0 win at Lille.
She also assisted Amalie Vangsgaard for the visitors’ fourth goal. Returning from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, Marie Antoinette Katoto also scored alongside Sandy Baltimore for PSG.
Marine Dafeur (Fleury 91, France)
Algerian defender, Marine Dafeur saved her French side from defeat.
She converted the equaliser in the additional minutes of the second half. Faustine Robert had given Montpelier the lead before Dafeur’s equaliser.
Ritah Kivumbi (Mallbacken, Sweden)
Ugandam forward, Ritah Kivumbi wrapped up the goals during Mallbacken’s 5-0 thrashing of Eskilstuna United in the Swedish second-tier Elitettan.
Lisa Frisk scored two goals for Mallbacken coupled with a goal each from Venera Rexhi and Linnea Berger.
Grace Asantewaa (Juarez, Mexico)
Ghanaian midfielder, Grace Asantewaa was the heroine as she scored the winning goal for Mexican top-flight side, Juarez.
Her 61st-minute goal was enough to secure a vital win for Juarez.
Jermaine Seoposenwe and Chinwendu Ihezuo (Monterrey, Mexico)
African duo of Jermaine Seoposenwe and Chinwendu Ihezuo scored a goal each to help Monterrey to a 3-1 victory against UANL Tigres.
South African midfielder, Seoposenwe opened the scoring in the 48th minute. Nigerian forward, Ihezuo restored the lead in the 85th minute after Belen Cruz had equalised for the hosts.
Christina Burkenroad sealed the win with a goal in the additional minutes of the second half for the Rayadas.
Zenatha Coleman (Fenerbahce, Turkey)
Namibian forward, Zenatha Coleman scored Fenerbahce’s opener during a 4-0 win Igwe Fatoh Vayan Spor.
Her opener propelled her side to a comfortable win. Busem Seker and Yagmur Uraz (brace) scored the other goals for Fenerbahce.
Vivian Ikechukwu and Opa Clement (Besiktas, Turkey)
Nigeria forward, Vivian Ikechukwu opened the goal spree for Besiktas during a 6-1 thrashing of Trabzonspor.
Tanzania star, Opa Clement also scored for the host in the 11th minute converting he side’s third goal in the process.
