Al-Ittihad make history as George Ilenikhena strikes twice early against Al-Nassr
Al-Ittihad set a new record in their Saudi Pro League meetings with Al-Nassr after scoring twice inside the opening 22 minutes of Saturday’s highly anticipated fixture.
The two goals were scored by Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena, who produced an outstanding start to the match and gave Al-Ittihad an early advantage in one of the most significant games of the fifth round.
Ilenikhena’s quick double made him the central figure of the opening stages, with the striker showing his sharpness in front of goal to put Al-Ittihad in a commanding position against their rivals.
According to football statistics provider Opta, this was the first time Al-Ittihad had scored two goals within the first 22 minutes of a league match against Al-Nassr since the professional league era began.
The achievement gave Al-Ittihad a landmark statistic in their head-to-head record with Al-Nassr, while also underlining the attacking quality they showed from the start of the contest.
Rather than allowing the occasion to unsettle them, Al-Ittihad took advantage of the opportunities that came their way during the opening period. Ilenikhena proved decisive, converting those chances and providing the difference between the teams early in the match.
His performance also continued his strong attacking form, as he found the net twice in a short spell to underline the threat he posed to the Al-Nassr defence. The forward’s contribution was the key factor behind Al-Ittihad’s early superiority.
The goals gave Al-Ittihad a significant platform in the game and ensured that the visitors’ attacking approach was reflected on the scoreboard. For Al-Nassr, the early setback came in a fixture that had already attracted major attention as one of the headline matches of the round.
The historic record was established during the first half of the match, with Al-Ittihad becoming the first side to score twice within the opening 22 minutes against Al-Nassr in their professional league encounters.
Ilenikhena’s double therefore carried significance beyond the immediate scoreline. It provided Al-Ittihad with a fast start, placed the Nigerian forward firmly at the centre of the contest and added a new entry to the club’s record against one of their most prominent opponents.
The match is being played on Saturday as part of the fifth round of the Roshn Saudi League.
