Barcelona and Fiorentina talent help Spain overcome Nigeria at U20 World Cup
Spain began their FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup title defence with a 2-0 win over Nigeria on Monday, as players from Barcelona and Fiorentina made the difference for the 2022 champions at Arena Sosnowiec.
Nigeria’s Super Falconets struggled to match Spain’s technical quality and control for much of the Group F encounter, with Moses Aduku’s side spending long periods without possession against one of the tournament favourites.
Spain, whose squad is largely made up of players from Barcelona and Real Madrid, set the pace from the opening stages. Their passing and movement forced Nigeria to defend deep, and they were rewarded with the opening goal after 13 minutes.
Marisa reacted quickest when Noemi Bejarano’s low cross was not dealt with properly. She poked the loose ball into the net to give Spain a deserved lead and leave Nigeria facing an even more difficult challenge.
The Falconets had a chance to respond almost immediately. Three minutes after Spain’s opener, Folajomi Olabiyi was played through on goal with a well-weighted pass. However, she was under pressure from two defenders and could only shoot straight at Spain goalkeeper Laia Lopez.
That proved to be one of Nigeria’s few clear opportunities as Spain continued to control the match. The European side kept the ball effectively and restricted the Falconets’ ability to build sustained attacks.
Spain eventually extended their advantage after the interval through Alba Cerrato, the Fiorentina forward who had come on as a substitute. She received possession inside the penalty area before sending a low effort past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma at the near post.
Uzoma had appeared uncertain during the match, and Cerrato’s finish completed a difficult afternoon for the Nigeria goalkeeper.
The statistics underlined Spain’s dominance. They completed 585 passes during the game, compared with just 113 by Nigeria, and maintained control until the final whistle to secure a 2-0 victory.
Nigeria must respond against China
The result leaves Nigeria needing to recover quickly as their group campaign continues. The Falconets face China in their next Group F fixture on 10 September, before completing the group stage against New Caledonia three days later.
The tournament format means Nigeria still have an opportunity to reach the knockout phase. The top two teams in each group will qualify automatically, while the four best third-placed teams will also advance to the last 16.
However, the defeat has reduced the margin for error in Nigeria’s remaining matches. A victory against China would restore their hopes of progressing, whereas another loss could leave Aduku’s team requiring an almost perfect performance against New Caledonia in their final group game.
