Brighton step up pursuit of Nigeria winger Femi Azeez before transfer deadline
Brighton & Hove Albion are maintaining their attempt to sign newly capped Nigeria international winger Femi Azeez, despite having two bids rejected by Millwall.
The English Premier League club are expected to intensify their pursuit of the 25-year-old as they try to reach an agreement before the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday.
Brighton’s latest offer was reportedly worth just over £10m. However, that figure remains below Millwall’s valuation of Azeez, who was named in the English Championship team of the season.
The two clubs are expected to continue negotiations, with Azeez understood to be keen on a move to Brighton. Millwall are also willing to help the winger fulfil his ambition of playing in the English Premier League, according to the report.
Azeez’s situation is therefore set to remain one of the key transfer stories to follow until the deadline. Although Brighton have already seen two proposals turned down, their continued interest means a deal remains possible if they can meet Millwall’s asking price.
The winger’s emergence has attracted attention from a number of clubs during the summer. Newly promoted Ipswich Town reportedly made an unsuccessful approach earlier in the window, while Aston Villa were also linked with a move. Several clubs in Italy were said to be monitoring his situation as well.
Brighton are now the latest side to make a serious attempt to secure his services. Their interest comes after a season in which Azeez’s performances earned him recognition in the English Championship team of the season and helped establish him as one of the division’s more sought-after players.
He has also recently received international recognition after becoming a newly capped Nigeria player, adding to the interest surrounding his future at club level.
Millwall’s position is understood to be based on the valuation they have placed on the winger, while the player’s desire to move to the top flight could influence the discussions before Tuesday’s deadline. The club are reportedly prepared to work with him, but Brighton must still close the gap between their offer and Millwall’s demands.
For now, no agreement has been reached and the latest bid remains below the Championship club’s valuation. Further talks are expected as Brighton continue their efforts to complete a transfer for Azeez.
