Crystal Palace agree loan deal for Chelsea-bound defender Honest Ahanor

Premier League club Crystal Palace have won the race to sign Nigerian-eligible centre-back Honest Ahanor on loan from Chelsea for the 2026-27 campaign.

The Eagles have reportedly agreed a deal with Chelsea to take the teenage defender to Selhurst Park, although the move is dependent on the Blues completing their permanent transfer agreement with Atalanta.

Chelsea are understood to have reached a verbal agreement with the Italian club for Ahanor’s transfer, with the deal valued at about £40m. The 2026 summer window is approaching its conclusion, meaning the next stage of the move is expected to be completed soon.

Ahanor came to Chelsea’s attention after an impressive season with Atalanta. The teenager made 35 appearances across all competitions for the club last term and also provided one assist.

His performances at the Gewiss Stadium convinced Chelsea that he was a player worth pursuing. The defender’s consistency and solidity were key factors in the Premier League club’s decision to seek a permanent deal for him.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea and Atalanta had reached a verbal agreement over the proposed £40m transfer.

However, Ahanor is not expected to remain at Stamford Bridge immediately after joining Chelsea. Instead, the club want him to spend the new season elsewhere, where he can secure regular first-team football and continue his development in the Premier League.

Palace moved quickly to secure the defender’s temporary services and see him as an important addition to their defensive options. Their agreement with Chelsea gives Ahanor the opportunity to continue his progress at Selhurst Park while adapting to the demands of English football.

The Nigerian-eligible defender will now be hoping to complete the move before the transfer window closes. Regular playing time will be central to his development as he adjusts to Premier League football.

For Chelsea, the arrangement would allow them to complete Ahanor’s permanent signing from Atalanta while giving him the chance to gain experience away from Stamford Bridge. Palace, meanwhile, have emerged as the club most likely to provide that opportunity after winning the race for his loan move.

The teenager’s performances for Atalanta last season made him an attractive target for Chelsea, while Palace’s need to strengthen their defence has created a route for him to play regularly in the Premier League.

The proposed move therefore represents the next stage in Ahanor’s development: first completing his transfer to Chelsea, then joining Crystal Palace on loan for the 2026-27 campaign.
