Burkina Faso beat Nigeria to win WAFU B U20 title and seal 2027 AFCON place

Burkina Faso claimed the WAFU B U20 title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Nigeria in the final, securing qualification for the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The Young Stallions settled the contest with a dominant first-half display, scoring three times before the interval and leaving Nigeria with an almost impossible task after the break.

Alassana Bagayogo opened the scoring before Louckman Tapsoba and Issouf Dabo added further goals to give Burkina Faso a commanding advantage. Nigeria, known as the Flying Eagles, struggled to respond as their opponents controlled the final and established a decisive lead.

The result completed a highly successful tournament for Burkina Faso and delivered revenge over Nigeria, who had defeated the same opponents during the group stage. This time, however, the Young Stallions produced a far more authoritative performance when the regional title was at stake.

Nigeria’s defeat also ended their hopes of retaining the trophy they won in 2024. The Flying Eagles had been attempting to defend their WAFU B U20 crown, but Burkina Faso’s emphatic victory ensured the title would change hands.

For the Young Stallions, the triumph represents an important achievement at regional level. As well as lifting the WAFU B U20 trophy, Burkina Faso have earned a place at the continental finals, which will be hosted by Ghana in 2027.

The qualification means Burkina Faso will join Ghana at the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana qualify as hosts, while Burkina Faso secured their place through their success in the regional competition.

The final brought the tournament to a decisive conclusion, with Burkina Faso demonstrating greater control and efficiency on the day. Their three-goal first-half performance put them firmly in charge and allowed them to finish the competition as deserved champions.

Nigeria were unable to reproduce the result from the group stage, when they had overcome Burkina Faso, and instead found themselves trailing throughout the final. The Flying Eagles’ efforts to remain in contention were frustrated by the Young Stallions’ commanding start.

Burkina Faso’s victory therefore carried significance beyond the final score. It avenged their earlier group-stage loss to Nigeria, prevented the defending champions from keeping the trophy and secured progression to the next U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

With the regional crown now in their possession, the Young Stallions leave the competition as the strongest side in the final and with their place at the continental finals confirmed.
