Casemiro hails Messi’s commitment after father’s death: ‘I have never seen anyone like him’

Lionel Messi returned to action for Inter Miami only four days after the death of his father, with team-mate Casemiro praising the Argentina captain’s commitment and describing him as an example to others.

Messi came off the bench in the second half of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Club Leon in the early hours of today. Despite his return, Inter Miami were eliminated from the competition after losing 3-2 in the group stage.

Casemiro said Messi had shown exceptional dedication by making himself available for the match despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his family.

“He is an example to follow. I am sure he is going through an extremely difficult time, but his commitment, not only to the players but also to the club, was incredible; I have never seen anyone like him in my life,” Casemiro said, according to Mundo Deportivo.

“All we can do is thank him for being here.”

Messi had not returned to Inter Miami since his father died on Saturday. The forward travelled to Argentina with his family on that day before rejoining the United States club for the Leagues Cup fixture.

Casemiro said the decision to play under such circumstances was one of the qualities that made Messi great. He also described the Argentine as one of “the best players in history, if not the best”.

Messi’s appearance came as Inter Miami attempted to continue their progress in the Leagues Cup. However, Club Leon’s 3-2 victory ended their campaign at the group stage, leaving Casemiro disappointed with the outcome.

“It is difficult, especially when you lose, but we know that we have to continue improving,” he said.

“It was a tournament I really wanted to win, and the result left us extremely frustrated.”

The match marked Messi’s return to playing duties just days after the loss of his father, while his second-half involvement underlined his willingness to support Inter Miami despite the personal circumstances.

Casemiro’s comments focused on the captain’s decision to be present for his team, rather than on the result that brought Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup run to an end. His assessment also reflected the high regard in which Messi is held by his team-mates, with the Brazilian linking the player’s professionalism and commitment to his status among football’s greatest figures.

Inter Miami were unable to use Messi’s return to secure a result against Club Leon, but the Argentina forward was back on the pitch after his brief absence. For Casemiro, that decision provided further evidence of why Messi is regarded as an exceptional player and a leading figure within the club.
