Derby County join Lecce in race for Basel winger Philip Otele

Derby County have opened talks with Basel over a possible deal for Nigeria winger Philip Otele, with Lecce also pursuing the 27-year-old this summer.

Otele, who represents the Super Eagles, could become the subject of a transfer battle involving clubs from England and Italy, according to reports cited by Soccernet.ng.

The versatile attacker spent last season on loan with German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV. He returned to Basel at the end of the campaign and has since featured regularly in the Swiss side’s pre-season friendlies.

Otele still has two years remaining on his Basel contract, but his future is uncertain after Lecce made their interest known last week. The Serie A club have not yet reached an agreement with Basel over a transfer.

The Italian side are understood to admire Otele’s ability to dribble past opponents, his explosive acceleration and his direct approach in attack. However, Lecce’s failure to complete a deal has given other clubs an opportunity to enter the race.

According to TransferFeed, Derby County have already begun discussions with Basel about a potential transfer for Otele. The Championship club are believed to be strongly interested in adding the Nigerian to their squad.

Basel value Otele at about €5m, a figure that could make him an attractive option for a Championship side. Derby have yet to decide whether to pursue a permanent transfer or explore the possibility of signing him on loan.

Whatever the proposed structure, Derby will need to move quickly if they are to win the race for his signature. Lecce remain interested, while Birmingham City and Frosinone are also monitoring the five-cap Super Eagles winger.

The transfer window is due to close at the beginning of next month, leaving the interested clubs with limited time to complete their business and strengthen their squads.

Derby have been outside the Premier League since 2008 and have moved between the Championship and League One during that period. They finished eighth in the Championship last season, ending the campaign four points short of a play-off place.

The club will hope to challenge more strongly for promotion, and the addition of a player with Otele’s pace and attacking qualities could potentially improve their prospects.

Derby have employed a number of high-profile former players as managers in recent years, including Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney. Rooney was in charge when the club were relegated in 2022.

Lampard’s former club could now face competition from Lecce, Birmingham City and Frosinone as they attempt to secure Otele, whose next move is likely to be decided before the transfer window closes.
