Fulham, Tottenham and Crystal Palace face setback in pursuit of Nigeria defender Nwaiwu

Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have been unable to agree a deal for Chibuike Nwaiwu after Trabzonspor rejected offers for the Nigeria defender and refused to reduce their asking price.

The 23-year-old centre-back has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, as well as Italian side Napoli, following an impressive opening period in Turkey. Trabzonspor are determined to retain Nwaiwu unless a prospective buyer meets their valuation.

Fulham have made the most significant progress in the transfer race, reaching an agreement with the defender over a four-year contract. However, talks between the two clubs have stalled because of a substantial gap between Fulham’s valuation and Trabzonspor’s demands.

The London club identified Nwaiwu as one of its leading targets after Issa Diop’s departure. Fulham’s initial bid was rejected immediately by Trabzonspor, before a second offer was submitted with additional performance-related bonuses. That proposal was also turned down.

With Fulham unable to reach an agreement, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Napoli remain interested in the Nigerian. They are understood to be monitoring the situation in case the Turkish club changes its position or negotiations with Fulham fail to progress.

Trabzonspor have set their asking price at between €30 million and €35 million and are not prepared to sell Nwaiwu for less. The defender joined the Turkish club from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC in January 2026 for about €5.5 million.

His value has increased considerably since that move after a strong second half of the season. Nwaiwu established himself as a regular starter and helped Trabzonspor win the Turkish Cup.

He appeared in 21 competitive matches, scoring three goals and providing one assist. His ability to operate both in central defence and as a defensive midfielder has further enhanced his appeal to clubs looking for defensive versatility.

Nwaiwu’s performances have also prompted reports that he would be open to a move to the Premier League. Such a transfer could help him strengthen his position in Nigeria’s national team ahead of future international competitions.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan, however, has made it clear that the club does not intend to accept an offer below what it considers the defender’s market value. He has also stressed that Trabzonspor have not received a bid close to their €30 million to €35 million valuation.

The Turkish club therefore remain in control of the situation. Unless Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace or Napoli meet the asking price, Nwaiwu is expected to continue his development in the Turkish Super Lig and remain an important player for both Trabzonspor and the Super Eagles.
