FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a strong condemnation of the violence that erupted during a Turkish Süper Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce, calling for accountability in the aftermath of the disturbing scenes.

The incident, which occurred during Fenerbahce’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory, saw players from both teams targeted by fans who stormed the pitch after the final whistle.

Nigerian international Bright Osayi-Samuel, who featured as a wing-back for Fenerbahce, was captured in footage throwing a punch at one of the invading supporters in an act of self-defense.

Infantino emphasized the importance of player safety and urged authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for the violence.

“The violence witnessed after the Turkish Süper Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe is absolutely unacceptable – on or off the field, it has no place in our sport or society,” stated the FIFA president.

Expressing concern for the well-being of all players, Infantino reiterated the fundamental principle that every individual involved in football should feel safe and secure.

He called on relevant authorities to uphold this principle and ensure that the perpetrators of the shocking events in Trabzon are held accountable for their actions.

While acknowledging Osayi-Samuel’s involvement in the altercation, Infantino emphasized the exceptional circumstances of the situation, indicating that the player’s actions were motivated by the need to protect himself from the unruly attackers.

As such, it is unlikely that Osayi-Samuel will face disciplinary action for his response to the pitch invasion.
