Getafe chief defends Uche outburst against Spanish referees
By Saheed Afolabi
Getafe President, Angel Torres has come in defense of Nigeria midfielder, Uche Christantus following his outburst against Spanish referees.
Uche has blamed LaLiga referees for failing to accord him the same treatment given to other professional players in the league while he faces racist chants from opposition supporters at the stadium.
Torres called for the stop of racism which has no place in football while he acknowledges the wrongdoings of Uche in calling out referees, blaming the journalist who interviewed the 21-year-old playmaker for capitalizing on the player’s naivety and non understanding of Spanish language.
“Racism is not good, it has to stop. Everybody is the same, everybody is equal. He has made a complete mistake,” Torres was quoted by El Chiringuito TV.
“The fact that it is not the right question to ask a young man who has just arrived does not justify him speaking badly of the referees or anyone else.
“I will talk to him as I haven’t seen the full interview. I don’t want to justify it, but someone who doesn’t speak Spanish, who has a microphone placed in front of him, it seems to me that the journalist is more at fault.”
The Getafe boss however urges the Spanish disciplinary committee to withdraw from placing any disciplinary actions against Uche who’s new to the LaLiga terrain.
“Let’s hope that the [Spanish Football Federation disciplinary] committees understand it. The people in charge of my press office who were not there but have listened to it, and the journalists who ask that question to a lad who just arrived a month and a half ago, are just as guilty. That doesn’t justify him having to speak badly of anyone.”
