Leeds host Manchester United as Okafor targets another setback for struggling visitors

Leeds United welcome Manchester United to Elland Road on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with both clubs searching for form and Noah Okafor hoping to trouble the visitors in front of the home supporters.
The Premier League gameweek seven fixture begins at 14:00 WAT (14:00 BST local time). Leeds lost 2-1 at Arsenal in their previous match, while Manchester United have gone three league games without a win.
Form and players with Nigerian roots
Leeds have won once in their past five league matches: a 4-1 home victory over Newcastle United on 14 September. That result came between draws with Brentford, Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Their unbeaten five-match run ended with defeat at Arsenal on 10 October, although James Justin’s equaliser showed Leeds remain capable of competing with stronger sides. They are unbeaten in three Premier League home matches this season.
Manchester United’s only victory in the same period was a 5-2 win against Ipswich Town on 30 August. They have since drawn with Everton, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, while losing 1-0 at home to Manchester City.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead against Tottenham on 10 October, but Dominic Solanke equalised in stoppage time against 10-man United. The result increased the pressure on interim head coach Michael Carrick. Three days later, United were beaten 2-0 by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, with Leny Yoro sent off late on.
Leeds have two players of Nigerian descent in Lukas Nmecha and Okafor. Okafor, whose father is Nigerian and mother Swiss, was eligible to represent either country but chose Switzerland after progressing through their youth teams. He has continued to acknowledge his Nigerian heritage and wore a Nigerian flag while celebrating a title triumph with Salzburg three years ago, attracting criticism.
Nmecha has a Nigerian father and German mother and chose Germany. The Nigerian Football Federation tried to persuade him to switch to the Super Eagles in 2021, but he had already decided to represent Germany.
Head-to-head and key battles
Leeds won last season’s meeting at Old Trafford 2-1 on 13 April 2026, after the teams drew 1-1 at Elland Road the previous January. Manchester United’s last victory at Elland Road was a 2-0 success in February 2023. In 94 Premier League meetings, United have won 38, Leeds 23 and there have been 33 draws, although Leeds have won the past two encounters.
Okafor is expected to start on the left, where he has scored three goals from 11 shots this season. He is likely to face Yoro, a centre-back operating at right-back because Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are injured. Okafor’s dispute with Switzerland coach Murat Yakin last month means he is currently focused solely on club football.
Bruno Fernandes has scored three goals from 20 shots and created 15 chances this season. Leeds’ Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka will try to block his passing routes into Amad Diallo and Mbeumo.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored three of Leeds’ eight league goals and will lead the attack. With Matthijs de Ligt absent, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez face the task of defending his movement, while Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson can supply crosses from wide areas.
