Lookman ends six-game drought but still faces fight for Atletico Madrid start

Ademola Lookman ended a six-match scoring drought with a goal in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 Champions League win over Manchester United, but the Nigeria forward still has work to do to secure a regular place in Diego Simeone’s starting line-up.

The 28-year-old came off the bench in the 71st minute and scored eight minutes later, reacting fastest after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had saved Jonathan David’s effort.

Pablo Barrios had put Atletico ahead in the first minute, while Manchester United were reduced to 10 men when defender Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute. Lookman’s goal then completed a result that extended Atletico’s winning run to five matches.

For Lookman, however, the goal carried significance beyond the final score. It was his first Champions League goal of the campaign and ended a difficult spell in front of goal. Before the match, he had scored only once in all competitions this season.

His impact from the substitutes’ bench offered a timely reminder of his attacking ability, but it does not guarantee an immediate change in his status at Atletico Madrid. Players breaking into a starting position must produce consistently over a series of matches, rather than rely on one decisive contribution.

Simeone recognised Lookman’s importance after the match while also making clear that the forward has yet to reach his best level consistently. That leaves the Nigeria international with a fresh opportunity, as well as a clear challenge.

Lookman’s pace, ability to take on defenders, chance creation and finishing give Atletico another attacking option. Yet competition for places means his performances will continue to be measured against those of his team-mates.

The goal has therefore reopened the discussion about where Lookman fits into Simeone’s plans. His next task is to show that his contribution against Manchester United was the beginning of a sustained run rather than an isolated moment.

A return to regular club form would also be welcome for the Super Eagles, particularly with Nigeria preparing for future international assignments. Lookman’s latest performance provides encouragement, but his path to a regular starting role remains dependent on what follows.

The victory strengthened Atletico Madrid’s momentum, while Lookman took an important step by scoring on a major European stage. Whether that moment develops into a consistent sequence of performances will determine how firmly he establishes himself in the team.
