Sevilla reinstate Chidera Ejuke after transfer exit fails to materialise
Sevilla have brought Nigeria international Chidera Ejuke back into their first-team squad after being unable to find a suitable move for the winger, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
The 28-year-old had been excluded from Sevilla’s pre-season matches and was training separately from the rest of the squad while the club attempted to move him on. However, with interest in the player failing to develop, the Spanish LaLiga side reversed that decision last week and returned Ejuke to the group.
His reinstatement was underlined when he came on for the final 13 minutes of Sevilla’s opening league match against Rayo Vallecano. Sevilla won the game 2-1.
The club’s decision was also influenced by its failure to sign Adrian Liso from Real Zaragoza after the player moved to Mallorca. Liso had been Sevilla’s preferred target for the flank, but the lack of progress over Ejuke’s departure meant they could not create the necessary space in either their squad or wage bill.
Sevilla had hoped to free up room by transferring Ejuke before pursuing their intended signing. With no sufficient offers arriving, that plan could not be completed and Liso ultimately moved to Mallorca.
Despite returning Ejuke to the squad, Sevilla are not understood to have made a firm commitment to keep him beyond the close of the transfer window. His future therefore remains uncertain, even though he has now been included in the team’s plans for the immediate period.
Anderlecht were the only club to make an offer for the Nigeria international, but that proposed move did not go through. The Belgian side considered Ejuke’s wages excessive, preventing the transfer from being completed.
Ejuke had consequently been placed in an unusual position at Sevilla: initially separated from the squad as the club sought a new destination for him, but later brought back into first-team contention when no viable exit could be arranged.
His appearance against Rayo Vallecano marked the first clear indication that Sevilla were prepared to use him again. The club’s decision to reinstate him followed the absence of meaningful transfer interest and the failure to secure their preferred replacement on the flank.
For now, Ejuke remains with Sevilla and has been restored to the squad for next season. However, the club’s reluctance to guarantee his place beyond the end of the transfer window means a further change in his situation remains possible before the market closes.
