Hamburg agree deal to sign Nice and Nigeria forward Terem Moffi

Nice have accepted an offer from Hamburg for Nigeria forward Terem Moffi, with the striker now expected to negotiate personal terms with the Bundesliga club.

The agreement between the two clubs was first reported by Nice-Matin. The transfer fee has not been disclosed, but Nice have approved a lower offer than the figure they had initially hoped to receive for the 26-year-old.

Moffi remains under contract with Nice until 2027. The French club have been keen to remove his sizeable salary from their wage bill and create room for one of their transfer targets, Elye Wahi.

There has been no significant progress in Nice’s discussions with Frankfurt over a possible paid loan for Wahi. That has increased the importance of finding a solution for Moffi, whose departure would also help the club reshape its squad.

Ineos had originally been seeking a fee closer to the eight million euros option discussed with FC Porto when Moffi spent six months on loan there last winter. However, the ownership group has now given Nice permission to proceed with Hamburg’s offer at a lower figure.

Hamburg have been working on the deal for several weeks and faced competition from Turkish club Samsunspor. Moffi has been seeking assurances over his role at his next club, particularly whether he would be guaranteed a starting position and regular playing time.

Samsunspor had already promised him those opportunities, meaning Hamburg have had to convince the forward that he would have a significant part to play in their side.

Moffi returned to Nice after his loan spell and worked diligently throughout the summer. His attitude in training was welcomed by new coach Olivier Pantaloni and his coaching staff.

Despite his efforts, Moffi did not play in any of Nice’s pre-season matches, although the possibility of including him had been considered.

The striker joined Nice in 2023 during a period of substantial investment by Ineos. He is now set to leave the club after scoring 24 goals in 72 official appearances, provided he reaches an agreement with Hamburg and completes the transfer.

The move would bring an end to Moffi’s time on the French Riviera after three seasons in which he featured regularly for Nice, while also spending part of the previous campaign with FC Porto.

His next step is likely to depend on the conclusion of talks over personal terms with Hamburg. Once those negotiations are settled, the Bundesliga club will be able to finalise a transfer which Nice have already approved.
