Tottenham target Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as interest grows

Tottenham are preparing to intensify their efforts to sign Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo, potentially leaving Arne Slot’s side at risk of losing another key attacking player during the summer transfer window.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on X that Tottenham plan to step up their pursuit of the Netherlands international, with negotiations expected to move into an important phase in the coming period.

Gakpo is understood to be one of Tottenham’s attacking options, alongside Brazil winger Savinho, who remains a primary target for the London club. However, any move for Gakpo would depend largely on Liverpool’s stance and the price the club places on the player.

Liverpool do not currently regard Gakpo as one of the players available for transfer. That position could make a departure difficult, particularly after the 26-year-old played an important role in the team last season and regularly operated on the left wing.

The report comes as Liverpool face the possibility of significant change across their wide attacking positions. Mohamed Salah, the club’s first-choice right winger and one of their most prominent players in recent years, has already left, meaning Gakpo’s departure would represent another major blow to the club’s forward line.

If Liverpool were to lose both of their established wingers in the same season, they would face a demanding task to rebuild their attack. The club would need to replace Salah while also preserving the attacking quality required to compete for domestic and European honours.

Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo is therefore likely to become a major transfer story in the coming days, although Liverpool’s current position suggests there is no clear intention to part company with the player.

Gakpo’s status could nevertheless make him an attractive target for Tottenham as the club assess their attacking options. The London side are considering him alongside Savinho, but their pursuit will be shaped by whether Liverpool are willing to discuss a deal and by the valuation attached to the Dutch winger.

For now, Liverpool’s stance is that Gakpo is not actively being offered for sale. That leaves Tottenham needing to establish whether the situation can change, while Liverpool must assess the consequences of potentially losing another regular wide player after Salah’s departure.

The possible move has added further uncertainty to Liverpool’s summer plans. Gakpo’s continued presence would give the club an established option on the left, while his exit would create another significant vacancy in an attack already needing to compensate for the loss of Salah.

Tottenham’s next steps, and Liverpool’s response, will determine whether the initial interest develops into meaningful negotiations. At present, however, the indications remain that Liverpool have no stated desire to let Gakpo leave.
