AFCON 2023: Moses Simon tasks Nigeria to sustain winning tempo vs Guinea-Bissau
By Wale Mustapha
Nigerian winger, Moses Simon has called on his team mates to redouble their efforts as they take on Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in the last group stage encounter of African Cup of Nations, AFCON tournament on Monday.
The Super Eagles who are one leg in the knockout stage of the competition will only need to avoid defeat when they take on the second of the Guineans in their Group A pairings.
The Djurtus are mathematically out of the tourney with their opening two defects to both Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea but will only hope to play for pride against Nigeria.
Jose Peseiro’s men will be heading to the tie following a 1-0 win over Ivory Coast while Guinea-Bissau lost 4-2 against Equatorial Guinea.
Simon insists that the three-time AFCON champions need to wary about Guinea-Bissau because they defeated the Super Eagles during the AFCON qualifiers.
“We have to keep fighting hard and not underrate our next opponent [Guinea-Bissau]. They beat us in the qualifiers which is enough for us to be wary of them,” he told media.
“The good thing is that everything is in our hands now. We know what to do to be in the next round. The victory over Ivory Coast has helped us a lot.
“The most important thing now is for us to keep doing our best in training and on Matchdays. It is still a long way to go for us, but the key thing is to remain positive and keep working towards achieving our target.”
The encounter between Super Eagles and the Djurtus has been fixed for Monday evening at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
