Arsenal expose Coventry’s Premier League challenge as Awoniyi and Onyeka make debuts

Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka were both involved as Coventry City began their return to the English Premier League with a 3-0 defeat by Arsenal.

The newly promoted side faced a difficult opening fixture against Mikel Arteta’s team, who controlled the match from the start and gave Coventry a demanding introduction to life back in the top flight.

Kai Havertz put Arsenal ahead in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka doubled their advantage eight minutes later. Martin Odegaard, Arsenal’s captain, added a third four minutes after half-time to complete a convincing victory and give the club a positive start to their title defence.

Arsenal had chances to extend their lead, but Coventry avoided further damage as Frank Lampard’s side struggled to create a sustained attacking threat.

The result underlined the level Coventry must reach if they are to compete successfully in the Premier League. However, both Nigerian players offered indications that they could have important roles during the season.

Onyeka makes full Premier League debut

Onyeka completed the entire match in midfield, making his Premier League debut for Coventry after securing a permanent transfer earlier in the summer.

The move followed an impressive loan spell at the club during the second half of last season, when he helped Coventry win promotion to the top flight.

The 28-year-old endured a difficult afternoon against Arsenal, who dominated possession in midfield and allowed Coventry little time or space to build attacks. Even so, he contributed nine defensive actions, completed three passes that broke Arsenal’s lines and found his target with all four of his attempted long balls.

Onyeka committed three fouls but was not booked, and received a FotMob rating of 6.2.

His display was not spectacular, but his energy, defensive discipline and ability to cover ground showed why Coventry wanted to make his move permanent. Those qualities could become particularly valuable as Lampard’s team face more experienced Premier League midfielders over the course of the campaign.

The Arsenal match also highlighted the areas Onyeka must improve, particularly when Coventry have possession. Nevertheless, his defensive contribution could make him an important member of Lampard’s midfield in the longer term.

Awoniyi given limited opportunity

Awoniyi began the game among the substitutes and was introduced in the second half, having about 20 minutes to make an impression.

The striker had little opportunity to influence the contest. Arsenal were already comfortably in control by the time he came on, while their defenders restricted Coventry’s ability to create openings in the final third.

His arrival could nonetheless provide Lampard with another attacking option. Ellis Simms started ahead of Awoniyi but found it difficult to make an impact as Coventry struggled to produce chances, potentially opening the door for the former Nottingham Forest forward to challenge for a starting place.

Awoniyi completed a £9m move to Coventry from Nottingham Forest earlier this week. His previous Premier League experience was one of the reasons Lampard had highlighted for the club’s interest in signing him.

With more playing time and improved service from his team-mates, the 29-year-old should have opportunities to demonstrate why Coventry were prepared to spend £9m on him.

The Arsenal defeat was a severe test for both Super Eagles players, but it should not define what they can contribute across the season. Onyeka already appears to have a strong chance of becoming an important figure in midfield, while Awoniyi could push for a starting role as he adapts to his new surroundings.

Coventry’s next match is away to Plymouth Argyle in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday. They then host Hull City in the Premier League next weekend.
