Caleb Okoli header sends Leicester City into Carabao Cup second round

Caleb Okoli’s first-half header earned Leicester City a hard-fought 1-0 win over Northampton Town and secured the Foxes’ place in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The centre-back, who is also eligible to represent the Super Eagles, made the decisive contribution in the 15th minute when he rose highest to meet a corner from Luke Thomas. His powerful effort gave Leicester the lead and ultimately proved enough to settle the tie.

Former Leicester City winger Matt Piper praised the way his old club made an early impact from a set-piece during his commentary on BBC Radio.

“It is nice to see that the first goal is from a corner, as we haven’t seen many set piece goals in recent years,” Piper said. “It has been a downfall of us in previous seasons, and so it is great to see so early on.”

The goal was a significant moment for Leicester, who have struggled to make the most of set-piece opportunities in recent seasons, according to Piper. The former winger said it was encouraging to see the team benefit from a corner so early in the campaign.

Okoli’s contribution was not limited to his attacking impact. The Nigerian-eligible defender also played a key role in helping Leicester protect their narrow advantage and complete the match with a clean sheet.

He won 100% of his ground duels, while also recording four recoveries, three clearances and one interception. Those figures underlined his defensive influence in a contest which Leicester were unable to put beyond doubt after taking the lead.

The result means Leicester have moved through to the second round of the Carabao Cup after overcoming Northampton Town by a single goal. Okoli’s performance, capped by the winning header, will provide further encouragement as the club attempts to build momentum.

The strong centre-back will now be hoping to maintain that level of form and continue helping Leicester in their bid to return to the Championship next campaign.

Piper’s assessment focused particularly on the importance of the opening goal and the manner in which it was created. With Okoli providing the finishing touch to Luke Thomas’ delivery, the set-piece supplied the difference between the two sides.
