Rangers to open NPFL title defence against Katsina United

Defending champions Enugu Rangers will begin their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title defence at home against Katsina United on Sunday, 30 August 2026, Completesports.com reports.

The opening-day fixture will be played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, widely known as the ‘Cathedral’. Rangers will start the new campaign aiming to build on the success of last season, when the Flying Antelopes won the NPFL title for a ninth time.

Their meeting with Katsina United is one of 10 fixtures scheduled for the first matchday of the 2026/27 season. The champions will be expected to make a positive start as they begin their attempt to retain the league crown.

The season will begin two days earlier, on Friday, 28 August, when former champions Shooting Stars host newly promoted Inter Lagos at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, in Ibadan.

That South-West derby will be a landmark occasion for Inter Lagos, who will make their first appearance in Nigeria’s top flight after securing promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) last season.

Shooting Stars will therefore face a side embarking on its first NPFL campaign, while Inter Lagos will begin life in the division against one of the competition’s former champions.

The other Matchday One matches are scheduled to take place at venues across the country on Sunday, 30 August.

NPFL Matchday One fixtures

– Ikorodu City FC v Ranchers Bees
– Abia Warriors v Kun Khalifat FC
– Barau FC v Nasarawa United
– Bendel Insurance v Warri Wolves
– Enugu Rangers v Katsina United
– Rivers United v Plateau United FC
– Kwara United v Kano Pillars
– Niger Tornadoes v Enyimba FC
– Shooting Stars v Inter Lagos
– Doma United v Sporting Lagos

Rangers’ home encounter with Katsina United will be the headline fixture of the Sunday programme, with the reigning champions beginning their bid for another league title in front of their home supporters at the Cathedral.

For Inter Lagos, the opening match against Shooting Stars represents the start of a new chapter after their promotion from the NNL. The club’s first top-flight fixture will also provide the opening action of the 2026/27 NPFL season.

The complete first-round schedule includes meetings involving established NPFL sides such as Enyimba FC, Kano Pillars, Rivers United, Abia Warriors and Bendel Insurance, alongside fixtures featuring the newly promoted clubs.

Rangers’ ninth NPFL title last season made them the defending champions heading into the new campaign. Their first assignment will now be to begin that defence against Katsina United, while Shooting Stars and Inter Lagos provide the season’s opening contest in Ibadan.
