Harry Kane says England ‘missing final piece’ after World Cup heartbreak against Argentina

England captain Harry Kane says the national side are still “missing that final piece of the puzzle” after their World Cup 2026 dream ended with a 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina.
The 31-year-old striker, writing on X, spoke of “deep sadness” and the pain of falling just short of another major final, after England were denied a second successive World Cup showpiece.
Kane, who led the Three Lions through a gruelling seven-week campaign in North America, said the players had “given everything” but admitted coming up short was “hard to accept”.
‘No words big enough’ to ease pain
In a lengthy post to supporters, Kane wrote: “لا توجد كلمات كبيرة بما يكفي الان لتبدد هذا الشعور بالحزن العميق…
England had been aiming to reach back-to-back World Cup finals for the first time in their history, but were edged out by Argentina in a tight semi-final that extended the country’s wait for a first men’s World Cup title since 1966.
The defeat also prolongs a sequence of near-misses in the Gareth Southgate era, following the 2018 World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia, the Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy and the quarter-final exit to France at Qatar 2022.
‘We’ve been knocking on the door for eight years’
Kane acknowledged the high expectations placed on the current England side, saying they are justified given the team’s performances at recent tournaments.
England’s route to the last four included navigating tense knockout matches and challenging conditions, with Kane highlighting the team’s resilience in overcoming “difficult matches and complex atmospheres”.
Despite the disappointment, he insisted there was substantial pride in how the squad had represented their country at another major finals.
‘You fight, you fall, you rise again’
Looking ahead, Kane framed the setback as part of a longer journey towards success, stressing that the pursuit of glory does not always end in triumph.
His words signal an intention to stay at the heart of England’s plans as the team look towards Euro 2028 and beyond, with a core group of players now experienced in navigating the latter stages of major tournaments.
Message of gratitude to England fans
Kane ended his message by thanking fans both in the stadiums and at home who had backed England during their run to the semi-finals.
The striker’s comments reflect a familiar mixture of heartbreak and hope around England’s latest near-miss, as players and supporters alike begin to come to terms with another World Cup that ended agonisingly short of the final.
