Inzaghi warns Al Hilal of Mahrez threat before Al Shamal clash

Al Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi has praised Riyad Mahrez but warned his side must be fully prepared for a strong Al Shamal team in their AFC Champions League Elite meeting on 27 October 2026.
The third-round fixture presents another test for the Saudi Arabian club as they deal with a demanding schedule and continue managing the fitness of their squad.
Mahrez, the former Al Ahli Saudi player, is now part of the Al Shamal side. Inzaghi highlighted the Algeria international’s quality, while also pointing to the threat posed by several other players, including Spanish defender Pablo Mari.
“Riyad Mahrez is a great star, and Al Shamal have a number of excellent players such as Pablo Mari and others. We will do our best to do what is required,” Inzaghi said at his pre-match news conference.
Inzaghi expects organised Al Shamal
The Italian manager said Al Hilal would need to approach the match with maximum concentration, insisting Al Shamal could not be considered an easy opponent.
He praised their coach and squad, as well as the organisation they have shown in recent matches. Inzaghi said he had watched Al Shamal’s latest game and had identified a disciplined team.
“Al Shamal are a strong team with an excellent coach and outstanding players, so we will be present and focused in the match. I watched their last game and they are an organised team,” he added.
Fitness concerns for Al Hilal
Inzaghi also discussed the importance of recovery during a period of back-to-back fixtures. He said the coaching staff were working closely with the medical team to prepare the players for the coming matches without compromising their readiness for important games.
“Recovery is important, especially with the pressure of the matches. We are working hand in hand with the medical team to keep pace with the approach required by the upcoming games,” he said.
The Al Hilal manager revealed there were concerns over Martinelli’s readiness following the recent match against Al Qadsiah, while Mohamed Mahzari had been given time to rest.
Ruben Neves will miss the meeting with Al Shamal, while Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s availability will be assessed after training.
Inzaghi added that preparations for Al Hilal’s next match against Al Fateh were also being considered. Managing the players’ physical condition is therefore a priority as the club seek to continue their campaign without exposing their squad to accumulated fatigue.
