Lookman seals Atletico Madrid win over Manchester United in Champions League

Ademola Lookman scored after coming off the bench as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday night.
Atletico made the ideal start when Pablo Barrios converted Alex Baena’s assist in the opening minute, giving Diego Simeone’s side an early advantage.
The Spanish club remained in control for much of the match and appeared to have doubled their lead shortly before half-time. However, Johnny Cardoso’s effort was ruled out for offside.
Manchester United’s task became more difficult in the 74th minute when Leny Yoro was sent off, leaving the Premier League side with 10 players.
Lookman had replaced Julian Alvarez three minutes earlier and struck eight minutes after his introduction to complete the scoring. The Nigeria international applied a simple finish to secure an important victory for Atletico.
Lookman praises Atletico performance
Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo after the match, Lookman said the result would provide Atletico with confidence before their next Champions League fixture.
“We know how big of a win that is for us,” Lookman said.
“The guys put on a big performance before I come on, so it’s easy to come into the team and play.
“I tried to help the team defensively and offensively when I get the energy. It’s a big win for us; it gives us confidence going into the next game. Game after game, we have to be ready.”
Atletico Madrid’s next Champions League assignment will be away to Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, October 20.
