Former Tottenham midfielder Michael O’Hara has weighed in on Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title, suggesting that Mikel Arteta’s squad needs a prolific striker like Victor Osimhen to secure the championship.
Arsenal, who are targeting their first Premier League title since the 2023/24 season after finishing as runners-up in the past two years, are reportedly eyeing Napoli’s Osimhen.
The Nigerian forward, who was instrumental in helping Napoli clinch their first Scudetto in 33 years with 26 league goals, is rumored to be a key target for the Gunners.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal are prepared to offer around €100 million (£84.9 million) for Osimhen’s services.
Despite the speculation, there is ongoing debate among Arsenal fans and pundits about whether a striker of Osimhen’s caliber is essential for the Gunners to achieve their title ambitions.
In a discussion on Talk Sport, Arsenal supporter Rich questioned the necessity of acquiring a 25-goal-a-season striker.
He argued, “You mentioned that no team has won the Premier League without such a striker, but if we’re not conceding goals and are scoring plenty, do we really need a 25-goal striker?”
O’Hara responded by emphasizing the importance of a prolific striker, citing statistics to support his argument. He pointed out that in 14 of the last 18 Premier League seasons, the champions have had a striker who scored 25 or more goals.
“My argument remains the same,” O’Hara countered.
“No team has won the Premier League without a 25-goal striker. The proof is in the numbers. While it’s possible to win the league with a strong overall team performance, history shows that having a top scorer is a significant factor in winning the title.”
