South Africa rallies behind Super Eagles ahead of crucial DR Congo Playoff clash

By Dayo Awoniyi

In a rare display of continental solidarity, President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Danny Jordaan, has publicly declared support for Nigeria’s Super Eagles as they prepare for Sunday’s decisive World Cup playoff showdown against DR Congo in Rabat.

Jordaan, speaking with confidence ahead of the high-stakes encounter, said he believes Nigeria possesses the quality and experience needed to clinch a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He noted that the Super Eagles’ depth and the presence of players competing in top leagues across the world give them a clear edge heading into the final playoff round.

“Nigeria is a big team, and they have their players among the best in the world,” Jordaan said, adding that the Super Eagles’ chances will be even stronger if they perform at their usual level.

“If they can play up to their ability, I’m sure they will qualify.”

The SAFA president further emphasized that South Africans are united in goodwill toward their West African counterparts, expressing hope that Nigeria will overcome the Congolese challenge.

“On behalf of the South African people, we are behind Nigeria,” he concluded.

As the Super Eagles aim to return to the global stage after missing out on the 2022 World Cup, the team now carries not only the expectations of millions of Nigerians but also the unexpected backing of supporters from South Africa in Sunday’s decisive encounter.
