Stanley Nwabali shines on Chippa United return with 9.1 rating in PSL opener

Stanley Nwabali produced a commanding display on his return to Chippa United as the Chilli Boys began their 2026/27 PSL campaign with a goalless draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper was rated 9.1 by FotMob, the highest mark awarded to any player in the match, after making six saves to deny Golden Arrows and secure a valuable away point for Chippa United.

The 30-year-old had left the club after Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco, with both parties agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent. Chippa United re-signed him last month after his personal struggles became public following the deaths of his parents.

His immediate return to the starting line-up underlined why the club had sought to bring him back. Golden Arrows enjoyed most of the possession and registered more efforts, but Nwabali remained composed throughout to record his first clean sheet of the season.

The result also provided Chippa United with an encouraging opening to the campaign. The club finished only four points above relegation last season, making a point on the road a positive start as they look to avoid another difficult battle for survival.

Nwabali’s six saves were the clearest reason for his outstanding rating. He prevented every Golden Arrows effort that was on target, intervening whenever the home side threatened to break the deadlock.

His most important contribution came just before the hour mark, when he produced a double save to keep out Ronaldo Van Neel. That intervention helped preserve the scoreline at a stage when Golden Arrows were applying pressure and appeared the more likely side to score.

The goalkeeper’s performance extended beyond his work on the goal-line. He directed Chippa United’s defensive shape, communicated regularly with his back four and helped ensure the team remained compact under pressure.

Nwabali also dealt confidently with deliveries into the penalty area, making three high claims, while his alertness to loose balls resulted in three clearances and 12 recoveries. Those actions limited the danger posed by Golden Arrows and prevented promising attacks from developing into clear chances.

His distribution was less polished, with a passing accuracy of 65%, but it nevertheless represented an encouraging aspect of his display. The performance indicated that he can be trusted to contribute when Chippa United attempt to build play from the back.

The former Enyimba International goalkeeper’s leadership was particularly significant given that he had only recently returned following several months away from the club. Rather than showing signs of rust, he provided stability behind the defensive line and helped his team avoid unnecessary panic.

Although the outfield players shared responsibility for the clean sheet, Nwabali was the decisive figure whenever Golden Arrows created danger. His positioning, calmness and ability to make key interventions ensured that Chippa United were not punished despite the hosts’ greater share of the game.

The 9.1 rating therefore reflected a complete goalkeeping performance rather than a single spectacular moment. It recognised his shot-stopping, positioning, distribution, organisation and composure over the full 90 minutes.

Chippa United will now return home for their next match, when they face Richards Bay on 11 August.
