Thierry Henry Apologises to Nigerians After World Cup Joke Sparks Social Media Backlash

Former France international and football icon Thierry Henry has apologised to Nigerians after a light-hearted remark made during a 2026 FIFA World Cup broadcast triggered criticism from football fans across social media.
The incident occurred during coverage of the United States’ 4-1 victory over Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Henry was part of the broadcast team alongside popular online streamer and content creator IShowSpeed.
During the programme, IShowSpeed was seen wearing a pair of Nigerian Super Eagles shorts. Reacting to the outfit, Henry jokingly referred to it as “bad luck,” a comment that quickly went viral and sparked criticism from Nigerian football supporters.
Many fans interpreted the remark as disrespectful to Nigeria and its national football team, leading to widespread reactions across various social media platforms.
Following the backlash, Henry moved quickly to clarify his intentions and apologise to those who felt offended.
“I apologise to Nigerians if my comment offended anyone. It was never intended as a sign of disrespect,” Henry said.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona striker explained that the comment was made in jest and was not directed at Nigeria, the Super Eagles, or the country’s passionate football supporters.
Henry also acknowledged Nigeria’s rich football heritage and praised the country’s contribution to the global game over the years.
The controversy gained additional attention due to IShowSpeed’s massive online following and the worldwide audience following the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
While many Nigerian fans accepted Henry’s apology, others used the moment to highlight the achievements and legacy of the Super Eagles, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful national teams.
Nigeria has won the Africa Cup of Nations three times and has produced numerous players who have excelled in some of Europe’s biggest leagues and clubs.
Video clips of the exchange between Henry and IShowSpeed continue to circulate online, generating debate among football fans around the world.
Widely considered one of the greatest strikers of his generation, Henry enjoyed a decorated career with Arsenal, Barcelona and the French national team. His honours include the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, cementing his status as one of football’s all-time greats.
