Inter Milan snatch late victory over Fiorentina as Marcus Thuram makes club history

Inter Milan scored twice in the closing stages to beat Fiorentina 2-1 and move level on points with Lazio at the top of Serie A.

The hosts appeared set to suffer a damaging home defeat after Alejandro Jimenez gave Fiorentina the lead in the 65th minute with a powerful strike which Inter goalkeeper could only watch fly into the net.

Marcus Thuram restored parity for Inter in the 90th minute before Piotr Zielinski completed the comeback by converting a penalty in the eighth minute of added time.

The result gave Inter a seventh win from their opening eight league matches. They have also drawn once and now sit on 22 points, level with Lazio, with a superior goal difference according to the post-match standings.

Thuram’s equaliser carried a significance beyond rescuing Inter’s unbeaten run. The France forward became only the third Inter player in the three-points-for-a-win era to score in at least seven consecutive Serie A home matches.

According to Opta, Thuram joined Romelu Lukaku, who found the net in seven successive home league games for Inter in 2021, and Christian Vieri, whose record run reached 11 matches in 2003.

Fiorentina remain in deep difficulty after another defeat. Their points total stayed at four, with six losses, one win and one draw from eight matches.
