Katsina United sanctioned by NPFL after security lapses and pitch invasion

Katsina United have been punished by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after security failures and a pitch invasion during their match against Plateau United on Sunday.

The club was found guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security, allowing unauthorised individuals to enter restricted areas at the venue.

Katsina United supporters also encroached on the field of play during the fixture. The NPFL said the incident compromised the safety of players and match officials.

The league said the breakdown in security arrangements, followed by the invasion of the pitch, represented breaches of its framework and regulations concerning the protection of players and officials.

Sanctions imposed by the NPFL take immediate effect. Katsina United are therefore expected to comply with the ruling while any appeal is being considered.

The club has 48 hours, equivalent to two working days, from the date of the notice to appeal the decision.

The NPFL’s ruling follows concerns over both the management of restricted areas and the conduct of supporters inside the stadium. By allowing unauthorised access and failing to prevent spectators from entering the playing surface, Katsina United were judged to have fallen short of the league’s required safety standards.

The match against Plateau United was the occasion on which the breaches occurred, with the pitch invasion creating a direct safety risk for those involved in the fixture.

Katsina United may now challenge the sanctions within the stated deadline, but the penalties remain in force immediately pending the outcome of any appeal.
