Al Ahli target Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye to replace Franck Kessie

Al Ahli Saudi FC have identified Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye as a potential replacement for Franck Kessie, with the Villarreal player emerging as a summer transfer target.

Kessie left Al Ahli after his contract expired at the end of last season, bringing to a close a three-year spell in which he helped the Saudi club achieve major success. During his time in Jeddah, the Ivory Coast international played a significant role in Al Ahli winning the AFC Champions League Elite twice and lifting the Saudi Super Cup for the first time in nine years.

According to respected journalist Rudy Galetti, Al Ahli are now considering a move for Gueye as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the next campaign. Galetti reported the development in a post on his personal account on X, saying the club view the Senegal international as a possible solution following Kessie’s departure.

However, Gueye’s potential arrival is not the only option being considered. Galetti also said the 27-year-old is effectively competing with Kessie for the position, because the Ivorian could return to Al Ahli next season if the club are unable to secure a suitable replacement.

That leaves the Saudi club facing a decision over whether to pursue a permanent move for Gueye or try to bring back a player whose previous spell ended only at the conclusion of the last campaign. No agreement has yet been confirmed for either player.

Gueye has become one of Senegal’s most prominent players in recent seasons. He attracted particular attention after scoring the winning goal against Morocco in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal were initially credited with the title, although the championship was later withdrawn from the Teranga Lions.

The midfielder’s performances in Spain were also recognised at the end of the season. Gueye was named the best African player in the previous La Liga campaign after receiving 38% of the votes cast by supporters and journalists.

Gueye joined Villarreal in 2024 after leaving French club Marseille. Since making the move to Spain, he has played 64 matches for Villarreal and scored nine goals.

His experience in both France and Spain, together with his international role for Senegal, has made him an attractive target for Al Ahli as the club assess their midfield options. The Saudi side must now determine whether Gueye can become Kessie’s successor or whether the former Ivory Coast midfielder will return to the squad for the new season.
