Ballon d’Or 2026: Mbappe, Yamal and Kane contest historic prize

All eyes are on London as the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place tonight, with the outcome potentially ending the long-standing tie between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the history of football’s most prestigious individual award.
The two Spanish giants have each been represented by 12 Ballon d’Or winners, based on the number of players who claimed the honour while playing for each club.
Real Madrid could move clear at the top if Kylian Mbappe wins the 2026 award. Barcelona, however, have their own opportunity to take the lead, with Lamine Yamal also among the leading contenders.
Real Madrid’s list of winners began with Alfredo Di Stefano, who claimed the prize in 1957 and 1959. Raymond Kopa followed with the award in 1958, before Luis Figo won in 2000, Ronaldo Nazario in 2002 and Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
The club’s modern history has been shaped by Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the Ballon d’Or four times during his Real Madrid career, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Luka Modric added another award in 2018, while Karim Benzema became the club’s most recent winner in 2022. Those successes have taken Real Madrid’s total to 12.
Mbappe can add his name to that list with victory in London and give Real Madrid a historic advantage over their rivals, ending the current deadlock between the clubs.
Barcelona’s winners include Luis Suarez Miramontes, who was recognised in 1960, and Johan Cruyff, who won in 1973 and 1974. Hristo Stoichkov followed in 1994, with Rivaldo taking the prize in 1999 and Ronaldinho in 2005.
The largest share of Barcelona’s total came from Lionel Messi, who won the award six times while representing the Catalan club. His victories came in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019.
A triumph for Yamal would give Barcelona a 13th Ballon d’Or and put them ahead of Real Madrid in the all-time club standings.
Kane offers a third outcome
Harry Kane could prevent either Spanish club from breaking the tie after an outstanding season with Bayern Munich and England.
The England striker scored 73 goals for club and country, according to figures being cited in the Ballon d’Or race. He also won the European Golden Shoe for the 2025-26 season and contributed to Bayern Munich’s domestic successes.
Kane’s influence extended into the Champions League, although Bayern’s campaign ended in the semi-finals.
The forward has also received strong backing from Bayern Munich officials. The club’s chief executive, Jan-Christian Dreesen, said he would be pleased if Kane won the Ballon d’Or and pointed to the striker’s record-breaking goals for Bayern and England as strong grounds for his candidacy.
Mbappe therefore has the chance to take Real Madrid clear, while Yamal is aiming to keep Barcelona at the summit. Kane’s victory would leave the two clubs level and delay the resolution of their historic contest.
