Chelsea complete deal for Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor
Chelsea have completed the signing of highly rated defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, with the 18-year-old set to join the club officially in 2027.
The Premier League club have agreed a package worth about €48m, including add-ons, for the Italy international, according to Sky Sport Italia. Although the transfer to Stamford Bridge has been secured, Ahanor is expected to spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Crystal Palace.
The temporary move would allow the defender to continue his development in the Premier League and gain experience of English football before linking up with Chelsea’s first-team squad in 2027.
Ahanor made a significant impact during his first season with Atalanta, playing 35 times in all competitions after moving to the Serie A side from Genoa in July 2025. His performances quickly established him as one of the most highly regarded young defenders in Italy.
His progress at club level also earned international recognition. Ahanor made his first two senior appearances for Italy in June, further increasing his profile before Chelsea agreed the deal for his services.
The defender’s move to Atalanta came only last summer, when the Bergamo club paid approximately €20m to sign him from Genoa. At the time, that fee made Ahanor the second-most expensive Italian player aged under 17.
Only Pietro Pellegri, the former Genoa and Monaco striker, had commanded a higher transfer fee among Italian players in that age group. Ahanor’s rapid rise since then has now resulted in another substantial move, this time to Chelsea.
Atalanta had previously rejected a bid from Brighton for the defender, before Chelsea moved to secure an agreement. The package negotiated between the clubs includes performance-related add-ons and is understood to reflect the regard in which Ahanor is held.
Chelsea will now monitor his progress during his loan spell at Crystal Palace, with the club hoping he can maintain the development that has taken him from Genoa to Atalanta and then into the Italy senior set-up in a short period.
Ahanor will remain part of the long-term plans at Stamford Bridge, but his immediate future is expected to be in south London. Chelsea’s intention is for the defender to gain regular Premier League exposure at Crystal Palace before competing for a place in their first-team squad from 2027.
