Marcos Llorente rejects speculation over friendship with Ferran Torres
Marcos Llorente has responded firmly to the controversy surrounding photographs of him and Spain team-mate Ferran Torres during a holiday after La Roja’s 2026 World Cup triumph.
The Atletico Madrid forward and Spain international used an Instagram question-and-answer session to address the reaction to images showing him embracing and exchanging friendly kisses with Torres, the Barcelona forward.
The photographs, which circulated widely on social media in recent days, prompted speculation about the nature of the pair’s relationship. They were also accompanied by a stream of mocking and offensive comments from some users.
Asked directly why people had made such a major issue of Torres hugging him, Llorente said he was surprised that displays of affection between two men remained a subject of public debate in 2026.
“It surprises me that in 2026, showing affection between two men is still a topic of discussion, but when I see the prevailing mentality, I understand it,” said the 31-year-old, alongside a photograph of himself with Torres.
He added: “For me, there is nothing more manly than a self-confident man who is not afraid to show affection for his friend.”
Llorente’s comments were a clear defence of both players’ right to express their friendship without being subjected to prejudice or assumptions.
The pair have been close friends for several years and their relationship has been strengthened by their time together with the Spain national team. They chose to take a shared holiday after helping Spain achieve what was described as a historic success by winning the 2026 World Cup.
The images from that break led to the online debate, despite the players presenting their interaction as an ordinary expression of friendship. Llorente’s response directly challenged the tone of the reaction and criticised the attitudes behind the speculation and abusive remarks.
His message focused on the idea that friendship and affection between men should not automatically be treated as suspicious or controversial. He also made clear that he did not believe either he or Torres should have to hide those feelings because of how they might be interpreted by others.
