Sofyan Amrabat leaves Fenerbahce as Ajax agree deal for Morocco midfielder
Fenerbahce have ended Sofyan Amrabat’s contract by mutual consent, with the Morocco international now closing in on a move to Ajax Amsterdam.
The Turkish club announced the decision on Saturday evening, confirming that Amrabat had agreed to leave after one season with the team.
“ Sofyan Amrabat, who joined our squad during the 2024-25 season, has mutually agreed with the club to terminate his contract,” Fenerbahce said in a statement posted on X.
The club added: “We wish Sofyan Amrabat success and the best of luck in the next stage of his career.”
Amrabat’s next move could already have been decided. According to Tribuna, citing transfer market specialist Matteo Moretto, Ajax have reached a verbal agreement with the 29-year-old to sign him as a free agent.
The midfielder has accepted the financial and contractual terms proposed by the Dutch club, while Ajax are now working to complete the formal procedures required to finalise the deal.
Amrabat joined Fenerbahce in 2024 and spent part of last season on loan at Real Betis. His departure from the Istanbul club brings an end to his involvement with a side he joined during the 2024-25 campaign.
The Morocco international has built a career across several major European leagues. Before moving to Fenerbahce, he played for Fiorentina, Manchester United, Hellas Verona, Feyenoord and Utrecht.
He has also represented Morocco 69 times at international level, making him one of the country’s most experienced current players.
A move to Ajax would represent a return to the Netherlands for Amrabat, who began his senior club career with Utrecht before later playing for Feyenoord. The proposed transfer is reportedly strongly supported by Ajax sporting director Jordi Cruyff.
The Dutch club’s interest comes after Amrabat’s contract situation was resolved with Fenerbahce. With the agreement ending by mutual consent, Ajax would be able to complete the signing without paying a transfer fee.
Fenerbahce’s announcement was accompanied by a message wishing Amrabat well for the remainder of his career. The club did not provide further details about the financial terms of the termination or the length of the agreement being prepared with Ajax.
Amrabat’s career has included spells in Italy, England, Spain, Turkey and the Netherlands. He joined Manchester United before his time at Fenerbahce and also spent part of his career with Fiorentina and Hellas Verona in Serie A.
The midfielder’s international record includes 69 appearances for Morocco. His possible move to Ajax would therefore bring together his experience in several European competitions with a club that is now completing the final stages of negotiations for his arrival.
