Southampton star Mohammed Salisu claims new contract is ‘going to come’ amid breakout season

Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu says a new contract is ‘going to come’ after his breakout campaign on the south coast.

The centre-back spent time at Real Valladolid before joining Southampton for just under £11million in August 2020. He made 15 appearances during his first season in England, with 12 of those coming in the Premier League.

Salisu has become a first-team regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl during the current campaign. The manager has selected him in 33 matches so far, with Salisu getting one goal in that time.

He put in some top performances in the first few months of 2021-22. The Ghana-born star helped Southampton keep clean sheets against – and beat – Leeds, Watford and Aston Villa.

Salisu has had a few tough games in recent months, and Hasenhuttl’s men have lost five of their last eight league outings.

Despite this, Salisu is still expected to be a regular in the first team for years to come.

During an interview with the Daily Echo, the 23-year-old said: “For me, in football mistakes come. When it comes, you have to stay positive and try to believe in yourself.

“Try to sit down and see what’s not right so you can make it better. I had a couple of bad games, I will say. But I’m still working hard to get back to my best.

“I’m doing Ramadan and it’s not easy. It’s very hard at the same time playing games, I think it’s a little bit affected me. But I’m still working hard and I will get back strong.”

When asked how he would rate the current season at St Mary’s, the player added: “Great, I would say great.

“Four games left, it’s not going to be easy. We want to finish in a good place so we have to work hard every day and fight for every game to make sure we can.

“It’s been nine games and we’ve only had one win. I think the fans are expecting to win this Saturday, so we’re going to give our best and fight for everything to get what we want.”

Salisu’s current deal runs until June 2024. There have been rumours of a renewal and he has now addressed these.

“I’m focusing on here. I’m trying to work hard, I need to focus on here now and the future is the future. It’s going to come but now I’m really focused on here,” Salisu said.
