Super Falcons face key goalkeeping decision before World Cup play-off

The Super Falcons have three goalkeeping options to consider before their decisive World Cup play-off against Banyana Banyana, with Chiamaka Nnadozie’s position as the established first choice now under scrutiny following a difficult WAFCON campaign.

Nnadozie has been Nigeria’s undisputed number one for several years and is a multiple CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year winner. Her experience and standing within the team make her the leading figure in the current goalkeeping group, but recent performances have created an important selection question for the technical team.

The goalkeeper faced criticism during the WAFCON after errors contributed to difficult moments in matches against Malawi and Cameroon. Those incidents have raised doubts over whether she should retain her place for the high-stakes meeting with Banyana Banyana, despite her long record as Nigeria’s preferred option.

The decision will therefore involve more than simply considering past selection patterns. Nnadozie remains the most established goalkeeper in the squad, but the technical team must also assess her form and confidence after the problems encountered at the tournament. With the World Cup play-off carrying significant importance, every aspect of the position will be examined before the starting line-up is confirmed.

Comfort Erhabor is viewed as the strongest alternative to Nnadozie. The Portsmouth goalkeeper has previously impressed in friendly matches and is regarded as a dependable deputy. Her performances in those games, together with her experience and temperament, have placed her in contention for a starting role if Madugu decides to make a change.

Erhabor’s profile gives Nigeria a credible second option at a crucial time. She is considered capable of handling the pressure associated with a decisive play-off and has already shown enough in friendlies to be viewed as more than a back-up presence. Her reliability could make her a serious candidate should the technical team conclude that a change is needed in goal.

Fatima Oloko is the third goalkeeper in the squad and the only home-based player among the three. She remains regarded as a longer-term prospect rather than the leading option for the immediate fixture. Her inclusion means the squad has another goalkeeper available, although the main decision is expected to centre on Nnadozie and Erhabor.

Madugu has made clear that no decision has yet been finalised. The technical team will carry out a full assessment of the goalkeeping options before selecting the starting XI for the decisive clash with Banyana Banyana.

That review will determine whether Nnadozie keeps her place as the established number one or whether Erhabor is given the responsibility for the play-off. Oloko remains part of the wider picture as a goalkeeper being developed for the future, while Nigeria weigh experience, recent form and composure ahead of the contest.
