George Ilenikhena scores twice as Eric Chelle watches Nigeria-bound striker shine for Al Ittihad
George Ilenikhena strengthened his case for a future with Nigeria by scoring twice on his first start for Al Ittihad in their 3-0 victory over Najma in the King of Cup Champions.
The new Super Eagles striker was the standout performer after taking advantage of his opportunity in the starting XI, having impressed during pre-season. Ilenikhena joined Al Ittihad from Ligue 1 side Monaco in January and was rewarded with his first start for the club.
He needed only 16 minutes to make an impact.
Receiving a through ball from Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, Ilenikhena created space before sending a left-footed shot into the top corner of Al-Najma’s goal. The finish gave Al Ittihad the lead and provided an early indication of the threat he posed to the opposition defence.
The 18-year-old added a second before half-time. In the 38th minute, he struck a low effort from outside the penalty area into the right corner, completing a quick-fire brace and putting Al Ittihad firmly in control.
His two goals helped set up a convincing 3-0 win, with Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle in attendance. Chelle has played a central role in persuading Ilenikhena to represent Nigeria at senior international level.
Ilenikhena was born in Lagos but grew up in France, and his international allegiance has been the subject of considerable discussion since he made his breakthrough at the age of 17. He had been eligible to pursue a career with either country, but after talks with Chelle he has accepted the opportunity to play for Nigeria.
That decision was previously reported exclusively, and his performance in front of the Nigeria manager will provide further encouragement ahead of his anticipated involvement with the Super Eagles.
However, sources say Ilenikhena has not been included in Nigeria’s squad for the forthcoming AFCON Qualifiers matches in September. He is expected to remain available for later fixtures before the end of the year.
For now, his immediate focus is on establishing himself at Al Ittihad. The forward’s first start produced two well-taken goals and helped his side progress from a difficult contest to a comfortable three-goal victory.
Chelle’s presence ensured that Ilenikhena’s performance carried significance beyond the result. The striker’s decision to represent Nigeria has already generated interest, and his display against Najma offered an early glimpse of what he could contribute when he eventually becomes available for the national team.
