Barcelona ready to consider Arsenal bid for Jules Kounde
Barcelona are prepared to listen to a substantial offer from Arsenal for Jules Kounde as they work to reshape their squad and create room under La Liga’s salary limits.
The Catalan club are focused on strengthening several areas before the summer transfer window closes, with Rodri, Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo among their targets. However, departures are also essential if sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are to carry out their ambitious plans.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Kounde could become one of Barcelona’s potential departures if Arsenal make an attractive proposal. The Premier League club have shown serious interest in the France international as an alternative to their preferred target, Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa.
Aston Villa are reportedly asking for more than €75m for Konsa, a figure Arsenal consider excessive. That has increased the appeal of Kounde, who can operate both at centre-back and right-back.
Barcelona have already seen Ronald Araujo leave and are hoping to raise about €40m from the sale of Marc Casado in the coming days. Kounde represents another possible source of income, despite having recently extended his contract with Barcelona until 2030.
The defender’s new deal gives Barcelona significant negotiating strength, although the indications are that Kounde wants to remain at the club. He has joined group training and is waiting for further clarity from Flick about his position in the team.
Flick has already discussed the status of several other players, including Araujo and Casado. Kounde’s influence appeared to diminish last season, and the German coach seems ready to place his initial trust in Eric Garcia at the heart of the defence.
That has left Kounde with an important conversation still to come with Flick. His future could depend on whether he is convinced that he will continue to play a major role at Barcelona.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is attracted by Kounde’s versatility as he looks for a hybrid defender capable of covering both central defence and the right side. Arsenal have experienced serious defensive problems at the start of the season, with William Saliba unavailable indefinitely because of a back problem.
Jurrien Timber is also dealing with chronic issues in the thigh area, making it difficult for him to play regularly. Those concerns have strengthened Arsenal’s need to add defensive cover.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are preparing for every possible outcome. The club would certainly consider a major bid for Kounde, but only if they could secure a top-level centre-back to replace him.
Flick would have options on the left if Joao Cancelo completes his expected move, alongside Balde. On the right, Eric Garcia is available, while promising youngster Xavi Espart has clearly impressed the German coach.
Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing an elite defender, but the French club have not yet taken significant steps towards a deal. Current indications suggest they may instead choose a younger player with considerable potential.
Bayern Munich also have Kounde on their list, although the German champions are considered more likely to need to sell than buy at this stage.
Ultimately, the decision will rest with Kounde. His considerable market value, combined with a contract running until 2030, puts Barcelona in a strong negotiating position if Arsenal or another club submits an offer.
