Barcelona receive Gavi boost before Valencia meeting
Barcelona have been handed a boost before Sunday’s La Liga match against Valencia, with Gavi expected to return to on-pitch training on Thursday.
According to Sport, the midfielder is due to resume work on the pitch and is expected to take part in a significant portion of the session with his team-mates.
The development represents an important step in Gavi’s recovery after concerns were raised by an injury scare in Barcelona’s opening league match against Elche. The Spain international suffered a strong blow to his right leg during the game and began to feel discomfort.
Barcelona’s medical staff decided to take him off as a precaution. The situation caused particular concern because the injury affected the same leg in which Gavi previously suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament tear.
However, subsequent tests ruled out a serious injury and confirmed that the problem was limited to a bruise. Gavi has since followed an individual training programme designed to ensure that the pain disappears completely before he resumes normal football activity.
Barcelona do not intend to rush his return. The priority is for Gavi to gradually regain his feel for the game and rebuild his involvement in training rather than be pushed back into action ahead of schedule.
It remains possible that he could travel with the squad to Mestalla for Sunday’s meeting with Valencia. His presence at the stadium would therefore depend on how he responds to his return to group work and the progress he makes during the next stages of his recovery.
Gavi’s potential return is particularly significant for manager Hansi Flick. The 20-year-old is regarded as an important member of the squad both for what he contributes on the pitch and for his influence within the dressing room.
The decision to remove him against Elche was taken with his longer-term fitness in mind, especially given the history of the affected leg. While the latest medical assessment provided reassurance, Barcelona are continuing to manage his recovery carefully.
His return to the training ground on Thursday should offer a clearer indication of whether he can be involved in the matchday squad for the trip to face Valencia. Even if he is not ready to play, taking part in a substantial section of training would mark further progress after his programme away from normal team activity.
Barcelona will therefore continue to assess Gavi gradually, with his health and confidence taking precedence over an immediate return. The club’s approach reflects the importance of avoiding any unnecessary risk while allowing one of Flick’s key players to move steadily back towards full involvement.
